Political Agendas and the Tennessee Walking Horse

Tuesday, November 8th is the general election in which the United States will have a new president. This year’s ballot hosts candidates that are not immune to scandal. Many have been weighing the odds, trying to decide for whom to vote.
For many concerned about the walking horse industry, it is important to note that Hillary Clinton’s agenda on her web site, “Hillary’s Vision for America,” includes a reference to the show horse. Horse slaughter and soring are specifically mentioned under the section “Protecting Animals and Wildlife”. The Clinton agenda states, “Protect horses by ending the slaughter of horses for human consumption and cracking down on the practice of horse soring, in which chemicals or other inhumane methods are applied to horses’ limbs to exaggerate their gate.”
The obvious influence of the Humane Society of the United States is evident in many points under the animals and wildlife section. HSUS has strong ties to the Democratic party and supports many of their candidates. One to mention is Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and his wife Christie. She previously campaigned for the House of Representatives in Iowa. HSUS spent close to $750,000 in support of Mrs. Vilsack’s run for office. Her opponent Steve King was the victor.
