Obituary- Buddy Black

Buddy Black of Woodbury, TN passed away April 2, 2017. He was 87 years old. Mr. Black was a native of Rutherford County, TN. He was the second of six sons born to parents James Hillard and Eva Groom Black.
Buddy served with the 981st Army Engineers during the Korean War. He made a career in the Cannon County government system, and retired as Chief Deputy Sheriff and Court Officer after 20 years of service.
Mr. Black loved working with large animals. At age 13 he showed his first Tennessee Walking Horse, and in the mid 1950’s began training professionally. In 1957 he directed Go Boy’s Jet-A-Way to a Celebration blue ribbon winning the Three Year Old Gelding Class. During his career, he showed Sun’s Ace Of Spades. This stallion was the sire of WGC Ace’s Sensation, which he owned as a two year old. Scat Man’s Kitty Kat, the 1969 World Grand Champion Walking Pony was trained by Black. Other great horses in his stable were Go Boy’s Brenda Lee, My Fair Lady, Mysterious Shadow, Handshaker’s Princess, Son Of Bel Aire, and Society Mack K.
Buddy is survived by his wife Annabel Seward Black; son James Donald Black; grandchildren Devon and Destin; brothers Sam (Francis) Black and Bobby (Lynn) Black and a sister-in-law Gerry Black. Preceding him in death were three brothers Wayne Black (MIA Korea), Pete Black and Denny Black. Smith Funeral Home of Woodbury, TN was in charge of arrangements.
