jim gullet obit pictureJames (Jim) Gullett died peacefully at his Duluth home May 20, 2016. .Jim was born in Prentiss county, Mississippi on Sept. 30, 1924, to James Angus and Zora Gullett. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanine, daughter Patricia Tisma, Son Ronnie, daughter-in-law Cyndee, grandchildren Jon and Kari Tisma, Tonya Beaty(Husband Greg) Joseph Gullett(Wife Jessica) and 2 great grandchildren Gavin & Hudson Beaty.
Jim attented schools in Mississippi, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. In 1944 he graduated from Tech High school in Atlanta, Ga. At Tech High he played varsity basketball and football, serving as captain of the varsity basketball team. He received the award for Best-all-around athelete of his graduating class and received offers for athletic scholarships from several universities.
After graduation from high school he served for 27 months in the Army Air Corps, receiving an honorable discharge in 1947.
In December 1951 he married Jeanine Davis and they purchased a home in Druid Hills in Atlanta. They had three children, James Michael(deceased), Ronald William and Patricia Ann.
They remained in their home in Atlanta for 18 years, then moved to their current home in Duluth. Ga.
Jim was a true entrepreneur and had many business interests. Those include Gullett Feed Company, Duluth Hatchery. Gullett Poultry Farms, G & D Grading, the development of Hunters Trace subdivision, Hi-Speed Car Wash and Hi-Speed Oil Change. He received an award for Outstanding Car Wash in the Southeast and was honored as an outstanding operator by the Southeastern Car Wash Association.
He enjoyed fishing, boating and traveling with Jeanine and their friends in their Motorhome. In 1966 Jim & Jeanine purchased their first Tennessee Walking Horse and began what was to be illustrious careers as owners, exhibitors, and promoters of the breed. Jim served as president of the Georgia Walking Horse Exhibitors Association, was on the first executive committee of The Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders Association and was a founder and lifetime member of the Walking Horse Owners Association. Jim, wife Jeanine and all three of their children exhibited walking horses at one time or another. Family owned horses collected many blue ribbons at major shows throughout the southeast, garnering 7 world championships in various divisions.
Jim was an active member of the Tech High School Alumnae Association and was honored by the association by being selected as a member of the Tech High School All Star Football team of the 40’s. He enjoyed being a part of The Fourth Quarter, a group of Tech High alumnae athletes.
He was a member of Duluth First United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather and a very good man and a friend to all who knew him. Condolences may be sent by visiting www.billheadfuneralhome.com
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday at The Duluth First United Methodist Church With Dr. Tommy Green, and Rev. C. Kay Fuino officiating, Burial will be in Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Tucker, GA.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Methodist Childrens Home 500 S. Columbia Dr. Decatur, Ga. 30030 in memory of Jim.
